A very well-done historical Museum of the World War II Sampson Naval Base . Amazing what was created in a few short months to train tens of thousands of sailors .
Beautiful grounds
My father told stories about being at Sampson for boot camp. I was amazed at how much more there was to the story than what he told. This camp was a monumental achievement in a time of war, created to train 411,429 Navy and Air Force men and women for war. The sheer size of the facility - how many buildings were erected in such a short time is a testament of the United States will to win the war. The museum is housed in the old refurbished brig, and the photos and artifacts in the museum are all that remains of this historic undertaking. I hope my generation is never tested the way my father's generation was, but for achievements like the Sampson US Naval Training Station they truly are the 'Greatest Generation".
Hours are 9 to 5 Wednesday through Sunday during the summer , not sure about the rest of the year , suggest you call and confirm
